PENC member, Nicole Byrd-Phelps, of D.F. Walker Elementary School shares her achievement of a musical program she created at her school.

“Last year, I started a program called “Monday Morning Music.”  On Monday mornings, we have live music in our school cafeteria as breakfast is served to our students.  This gives students something to look forward to & enables them to be exposed to a wide variety of musical styles.  Student behavior usually is improved on those Mondays, due to the focus on the music.  Community musicians are featured, as well as our own students.  Students & community members alike have an opportunity to showcase their talents.  The performers are videoed, & the performances are shared via Facebook, school e-mail, & the D.F. Walker Music website.  We are proud to see this become a positive part of our school environment, each week.”

Nicole Byrd-Phelps: “Last year, I wrote a musical called We’re Riding On The Bus to showcase pieces of African-American history in Edenton & Chowan County.  I featured the third-grade class in which I worked with reading groups, mainly featuring those students, plus faculty/staff members, school system members, & community musicians.  This year, I wrote a sequel to that musical called Here We Go – What’s The Big Deal?  This time, I featured a musically-gifted fourth-grade class &, once again, faculty/staff members, school system members, & community musicians.  Other people, places, & events concerning African-American history unique to the area were expanded upon.  I was even able to take the cast members to most of the sites touched upon in the musical, which gave relevance & depth to what the students were doing to pull off this musical production.

Both musicals are on YouTube & can be found by entering the musical titles in the search box.  These musicals have helped our students & community members to have a greater sense of pride in the rich history of the county in which I teach.  Enabling them to be able to have access to these productions any time, anywhere, is a blessing to the citizens of Chowan county & those connected with it in other areas.”
