Legislative Update

PENC worked hard for educators across North Carolina this session. We initially were pleased with what we saw for teachers in the House budget.

Unfortunately, that plan did not prevail in the final negotiations. We were disappointed to see that the final budget was not as robust for educators as we had hoped.

Teachers will be getting a raise in this budget; however veteran teachers will not see the significant raise that was part of the House budget.

Also, we were disappointed with the 1 percent pay increase given to non-certified employees (teacher assistants, bus drivers, cafeteria staff, etc.), treating them differently from other state employees.

There were some positive education provisions and PENC will have a full report next week as we continue to read through the final budget document.
